Oh how I love/hate technological progression
Today, on 1up, I saw that a 250 gigabyte xbox 360 is availible. Of course it’s for the new blockbuster, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, due out November 10th, 2009 (11/10/09…like a bomb, get it? right.) Now I love the forward progression of technology, but I also hate the cost of that progression. I believe it’s safe to say that everyone else feels the same way about that as well. With that, here we go into another feature.
Why I love technological progression.
The world thrives on progression as it also thrives on technology. These two things combined are like the reese’s peanut butter cup: Amaaaazing. Look at today’s technology: We have the iPhone, the consoles, mini-laptops (I hate them, they’re not a real laptop, just like a chihuahua [HOLY COW I SPELLED THAT RIGHT ON THE FIRST TRY!] isn’t a dog. Cute, but it’s a luppie, like a chihuahua is a puppie.), new phones that make what looked nice 2 years ago look dumb, and many other things. With each progression, life has the option of becoming a little easier (though I will always want some activities, like driving cars and such). The forward progression of technology, to me, is the monument of creativity of mankind, time infinitum.
Why I hate technological progression.
Do you remember when you were a kid and money grew on trees and you could get the pokemon games for each type of Game Boy? Yeah, me too. Turns out money doesn’t grow on trees. The forward progression of technology is great, however the cost of moving forward also hurts the hobbyist and/or professional. I can tell you for a fact I will not be able to get this 250GB HDD because I don’t have enough money, simply. I probably won’t even be able to get Halo: ODST right away (Insert Sad Face Here). I know I’m not the only one, people are having to trim back, and it feels like a taunt towards those affected by the recession.
Short feature today, movie of the new system will be up right after this is posted. as always, email me @ rune@runeofred.com as for me, it is now time for homework. Wait till you boys and girls see what I’ve been doing. heh.

For Firefox users.
Do you use firefox? If you don’t I recommend it. For those who have gotten the latest version of firefox, some of you may have noticed Firefox Personas. Well I got news for you…
The Official ‘RuneOfRed’ persona is available.
Do take a note that if it doesn’t fit right now that you shall not worry, for I’m fixing that as we speak. Since it’s a new service, it may take a while for it to be applied. This is the first piece of ‘rorware’, which is any type of software that has Rune of Red branding on it or in it.
. Time for a happy dance, people. Again, if you don’t have firefox, download it, if you don’t have personas, get it, and if you don’t have the rune of red persona, you BEST get it…hehe.

Colorware
I was browsing the net today (like I do every day); normally I don’t find anything interesting, but I found this today.
Click on the image to go to this amazing website called Colorware. You can customize your gaming rigs (PC’s included) to various colors (I personally don’t like the one above, but it provides a nice example for what you can do with this). By the way, it not only does gaming rigs, they can do phones and such. Oh, and you don’t have to buy it through them either! You can send it right in to them and they’ll change yours to however you would like it (I prefer to keep my Halo: LE console as is, good to know though!) If you don’t have the system yet though, they’ll just add it on to the price, and make it brand-spankin’-new. Good deal huh? Yep. Here’s a link to their homepage.

The Desert of the Unreal
What happened?
I’m reading today’s video game news, trying to find a speck of interest in anything, allow me to show you what I see. From Kotaku I see the following headlines: Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box Review: My Cup of Tea, Activision: Courtney Love signed Cobain Contract for Guitar Hero 5, Adult Films push for presence on Gaming Consoles, Kotaku’s Fall Fashion Special, The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom Preview: Me, Myself, and Pie., and The Secret World Revealed: Factions, Progressions, and PVP.
Now, as the title says above, What happened? I remember days where it was news of what developers were doing on their games, and out of all those headlines above, I only see one article that even sparks my interest (good job The Secret World, you are an interesting game). It seems as of late any video game news has been in the form of screaming like tweens about the new Rock Band: Beatles or Guitar Hero 5 (that game genre either needs to tone it down on game releases or die, up to them), gossiping about controversy (Courtney Love and the Adult Industry in this case), or trying to appeal to specific crowds (the review, preview, and the ‘fashion special’….what the hell, kotaku? REALLY? a fashion special?) Not to mention all the (insert name here)Cons or if you want to set yourself SOOOOOOOOO far apart from the crowd (*cough*PennyArcadeExpo*cough*). I feel like I’m reading a Cosmo or People magazine when I’m reading these. Is there nothing amazing (aside from Halo: ODST, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, Assassins Creed 2 and Left 4 Dead 2…gah, yet another Feature to write…wonderful) coming? Not one of these games save the few exceptions I said before even interest me. I don’t want to hear what cos-players are wearing at these dumb conventions and I don’t want to hear how great you think a child’s game is, and I REALLY don’t even give a crap about Courtney Love, Guitar Hero 5, Fashion Specials, Adult Films, or Rock Band: Beatles (Rock Band: Beatles will be the worst thing to happen to music games ever, you wait and see).
Hey, Remember that one rant I just did about making another feature? I’ll just include it here.
Have the ‘Bright’ imaginations of game developers across the world gone dim? I’m all for putting out sequels and such, but the hit title list is a bit…bland. Gears of War 2, Halo: ODST (5, 4 if you don’t include Halo Wars), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (6), Left 4 Dead 2, and so on. I know that Gears Of War 2 is already released, but I’m including it for posterity’s sake. I know there are many other games out there, and almost each of them is a sequel. The last good new IP that I played was Prototype, and even then, that’s borrowing off of GTA: IV and quite a few other games, so I’ll go with Mirror’s Edge since it’s the most original game I’ve played that’s the most recently released. I know I’m complaining on stupid things here, but it does irritate me to see no new (appealing) stories or genres being introduced.
I’m going to leave this one short.
The reason being? because it’s the same all over the video game industry. I may be wrong in some areas (in fact I know I’m wrong in some areas) but let this be known a venting of frustration with the lack of new commodity at the present moment. This article like any other, does carry merit to it; don’t disregard it. As always send your thoughts to me @ rune@runeofred.com

Kotaku Write Up: “10 Years of Dreamcast: What Might Have Been”
I thought this was appropriate for today. This write-up by Mike Fahey details all of the best-case-scenario events of the Sega Dreamcast in his own alternate universe.
It’s been 10 years since Sega launched the Dreamcast, and while it eventually failed, we like to think that in an alternate reality somewhere the Dreamcast reigns supreme. Let’s imagine Dreamcast victory! In order for the Dreamcast to have been successful, many of the decisions Sega made leading up to the console would have to have been different. We’re not going to go back that far. Instead, let’s imagine what could have happened following the Dreamcast’s U.S. launch on September 9th, 1999, to keep the noisy white console on top of its game.
September 9th, 1999: Sega launches the Dreamcast in North America, selling a record number of units thanks to the low-entry price and hot launch titles like Soul Calibur, Sonic Adventure, Power Stone, and Hydro Thunder. This actually happened, but we’ll get to daydreaming soon enough.
Early 2000: Sega rolls out a massive update to its SegaNet online gaming service, integrating matchmaking, friends lists, and instant messaging, along with a framework that makes it easy for 3rd party companies to get their titles up and running online. EA changes its plans to support the console, delivering a wide variety of action and sports titles, at least until 2K signs an exclusive license with the NFL. Yes, now we are dreaming.
October 26th, 2000: Sony introduces the PlayStation 2 to North America. The ridiculously low number of units available at launch encounter a problem with the North American firmware, causing them to explode when placed in close proximity to cute kittens and adorable babies. Sony still sells huge numbers, but third parties slowly begin to abandon the console, not wanting to be associated with exploding infants.
Yes, this step is completely necessary. The key to this little fantasy is more third-party support, along with an event so catastrophic that it could shake the strong foundation of fans that Sony had built up with the original PlayStation. I don’t like to imagine cute things exploding any more than you people do, but it would have to be something pretty extreme.
January 31st, 2001: Sega announces they’ll be ramping up Dreamcast production in order to meet the rising demand, thanks in part to the last minute, baby fire-inspired move from one Japanese company…
July 19th, 2001: Squaresoft releases Final Fantasy X exclusively on the Dreamcast in Japan. Fans are grateful that the console’s loud fan drowns out Tidus’ dialog. A huge spike in Dreamcast sales ensues.
November 15th, 2001: Microsoft releases the Xbox. Aside from Halo, the most popular games on the system are ports of Dreamcast titles.
November 18th, 2001: Nintendo releases the Gamecube in North America. Dreamcast fans laugh at its tiny proprietary discs, preferring their larger proprietary discs. Lack of third-party support eventually leads to Nintendo leaving the console business, concentrating on making Mario and Zelda games for the Dreamcast, Xbox, and PlayStation 2.5 (now with less baby ’sploding).
From there, things could pretty much move in the expected direction. Fans would eventually get Panzer Dragoon Saga 2, perhaps with the release of the Dreamcast 2 sometime in the middle of 2005 or 2006. Of course they wouldn’t call it the Dreamcast 2, as Sega was never big on adding numbers to their consoles. Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast….hell, we’ll call it the Sega Revolution. Why not?
Whatever you call it, we’d still have a sleek new Sega system in our entertainment centers today, and Nintendo fans would be desperately wishing for the Gamecube 2.
Oh, and 3D Sonic the Hedgehog games would still suck. There’s only so many problems you can solve by tearing a gaping hole in reality.
Hope ya don’t mind if I use this as today’s little feature, but I have a quiz tonight that needs to be done, and maybe afterward I’ll write something up, we’ll see.
